19th century
For Sale by AJD Antiques
Description

Dating to the first half of the 19th Century this two section Teak campaign chest with carrying handles, reinforced brass corners, flush drawer handles and a secretaire desk in the top section is in great condition.

The secretaire has a selection of drawers with a centre door hiding a further secret drawer and two internal secret boxes. Both sections are marked with a brass plate for "Capt Fairbrother", one is numbered "5" and the other "6". I wonder what happened to numbers 1-4?

Captain Fairbrother was probably Army but could have been Navy.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A campaign secretaire chest is a specialised piece of military furniture engineered for transportability, featuring flush brass fitting hardware, demountable sections, and an integrated fall-front writing surface.

These chests were typically constructed from robust timbers such as teak, mahogany, or camphor wood, reinforced with cast brass corner brackets and flush handles to prevent damage during transit.

Authentic pieces feature inset brass strapwork, flush-fitting handles, carry handles on the sides, split two-part construction for movement, and original hand-cut dovetail joinery.

Position the piece in a study, library, or living space as a functional writing desk, pairing dark timber tones and brass details with clean modern lighting and neutral backdrops.

Maintain the wood surface by applying clear beeswax polish regularly along the timber grain, buffing brass fittings gently, and placing the item away from direct heat sources to limit timber movement.
