Moldovan Floral Kilim, Circa 1900, 1.84m X 3.04m

1900 - 1920
Description

Moldova has a history of kilim weaving which stretches back centuries. Formerly the principality of Bessarabia, the designs of Moldovan kilims are usually taken from the local folk-art tradition, but also reveal the influence of Anatolian kilim design and also of Western European decorative arts. The technique, however, is very much in the local tradition with slit wefts rarely appearing, and warp sharing or tapestry techniques the norm. The black floral kilims, like our example, first appear in the late 19th century and were very fashionable until the 1920s. The bold drawing and daring colour combinations give the design a three dimensional feeling. These pieces were usually woven to be hung on walls, as is the case with this piece. The central floral bouquet is spraying out a small vase which is framed by a neo-classical style cartouche. It is a striking piece which would work equally well on a wall or floor. As it appears to have been hung for most of its life, it has survived the generations in excellent condition. Professionally cleaned and ready for immediate use.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Moldovan kilims are handwoven flatweave textiles originating from Moldova and the broader Bessarabian region, produced predominantly during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Characterised by bold floral motifs on dark backgrounds, these flatweaves were traditionally crafted as decorative wall hangings or floor coverings.

These kilims are typically handwoven using natural wool yarns on a cotton or wool warp foundation. The flatweave construction utilises slit-weave techniques to create sharp definition between the intricate floral designs and the dark background fields.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-spun wool irregularities, natural dye tonal variations, and traditional slit-weave construction. The motifs typically feature stylised roses and acanthus scrollwork borders, often set against a dark brown, black, or deep charcoal field.

A floral kilim serves as a central design element when paired with clean-lined furniture or modern neutral upholstery. Placement over non-slip rug underlays or layering atop plain woven carpets adds texture and visual depth to living spaces.

Vacuum regularly using a low-suction attachment without a rotating beater bar to protect the flatweave structure. Spills should be blotted immediately with a dry cloth, and professional cleaning by a specialist textile restorer is recommended for periodic care.
