Description
A good Coromandel-wood Lady's Dressing / Jewellery Box with TEN hallmarked silver topped glass scent and other bottles/dishes. Dated by hallmark on the silver items to 1863, London and silversmith 'TW', believed to be Thomas Wallis. The finely figured coromandel-wood case houses a brass key escutcheon to the front face and a central circular brass monogram disc to the top. The lid opens to reveal the main tray, clad in red velvet with gilded borders and section dividers for the various tools and bottles. There are ornate brass touches to the inside edges, with a 'press-button' to the rear, which when pressed spring releases the lower jewellery drawer. The red silk-lined lower drawer features section dividers, each decorated with a gilded edge. There is a red velvet circular section for a fob-watch. There are TWO hallmarked silver tools to the upper section, a mother of pearl corkscrew for extracting scent corks/seal etc and a pair of nail scissors. The TEN glass bottles are all intact, no damage, chips or scratches other than marking consistent with use and age. Each of the silver tops is monogrammed with 'DG' and ornately decorated with scrolls and foliage. Hallmarked for London, 1863, 'TW'. The tools section lifts out to reveal a small storage area within lined in red. Contained within the lid is a spring-loaded catch, which when depressed releases the ruched velvet interior section, that, when reversed, reveals a rectangular mirror. This reversible mirror can in turn be affixed into the inside of the lid for general use. There is a pull-out letter section behind, which appears to have been virtually unused! The case retains its original protective leather outer case with its sturdy carry-handle and securing straps/buckles. Dated: c.1863-5.
