The Antique Georgian 1823 Exquisite Diamond And Pearl Mourning Ring

£2,225    $3,048    €2,558
This exquisite Georgian mourning ring features nine old mine and rose-cut diamonds in a square head surrounded by a border of twelve elaborate pearls. A black band of enamel runs around the entirety of the shank, stamped with old English-style lettering that reads ‘IN MEMORY OF’. Inside the band, there is an engraved inscription that reads ‘Sarah Cochin Obt 8 Feb 1823 At 68’.

Mourning jewellery was a trend which grew popular in the Georgian times where the rich families commissioned jewellers to make personal and symbolic pieces in order to help with their grief process, offering the wearer remembrance, comfort and consolation.

This ring, circa 1823, tests as 18ct and has a total of 0.17ct of diamonds. One of the pearls has slight nacre damage, but all stones remain well held. It is in good condition, with light marks commensurate with age.
