Early to mid 19thc sailors tool, made out of lignum vitae, a wood used by sailors for a lot of tools, to assist him in his job as a sailmaker.....the concave part to the underside would be used to draw the hemp, yarn or twine tight and would fit over the rope that was intended to be sewn to the canvas. The end of the tool also can double up as a rubber in smoothing the seam of a sail.....in excellent condition with a very good colour and wear from many years of constant use.
