Very Long Victorian Silver Rose Gold Niello Locket Necklace

A fabulous late Victorian solid silver niello locket and chain, it's rare to find one so very long. The locket has applied rose gold decoration in a design of a single chevron and crossed laurel leaf boughs on the front; traditionally laurel wreaths have symbolised victory and peace and also have a longstanding association with academic success.

The meticulous niello work continues throughout the chain, with tiny stripes on every alternate link as well as the dog clip and springring clasp. The other links are thickly plated rose gold on solid silver.

Niello is a surface decoration of lustrous metallic black tones which has been employed by highly skilled artisans in many cultures since antiquity. Almost always applied to a silver base, it involves creating a black sulfide alloy which is fused by firing onto an engraved or otherwise indented surface to create beautiful contrasting patterns.

Both the locket and the necklace are in very good antique condition, all clasps and hinges are fully working.

Size: The locket measures approx 3.8cm across.

Length: Approximately 62 inches - can be worn in any number of ways: it looks elegant doubled as a long chain which fits over the head, or for those with relatively slender necks doubled again to make a stunning choker.
