Attractive Antique Rustic Flemish Victorian Carved Oak Gothic Hall Church Chair

19th century
For Sale by Abacus Antiques
Description

An attractive antique church chair. We date this chair to the mid 19th century.

The chair sits on square section legs at the front and splayed square section legs at the rear.

The chair has a brown leather seat pad with stud detail and the backrest has an ornate gothic carved backrest. The top shelf is impressed with the initials ‘JB Dr Beer’.

The chair has a height of 38.5" (98cm) with a backrest height of 22.5" (58cm), an overall depth of 17" (43cm), a seat height of 15" (38cm), a seat width of 16" (40cm) and a seat depth of 13.5" (34cm).

This attractive chair remains in good solid condition with surface marks commensurate with age and usage. There is some wear to the leather seat pad and the base of the legs have some chips primarily to the rear legs.

This remains a very stylish and elegant chair. That is supportive to sit on and will continue to provide rest for many years to come.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Gothic Revival furniture from the nineteenth century draws inspiration from medieval ecclesiastical architecture, incorporating elements such as lancet arches, heraldic carving, tracery panels, and solid oak construction.

These chairs were primarily constructed from solid hardwoods such as oak or walnut, often featuring upholstered leather or velvet seats secured with brass studding or metal tacks.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit hand-carved architectural details, mortise and tenon joinery, aged patina on the wood surface, and original brass fixings or upholstery studs.

A carved Gothic chair functions as a focal accent piece in hallways, reading corners, or home offices, offering contrast when placed against plain walls or modern minimalist decor.

Dust timber regularly with a soft cloth and apply beeswax polish annually along the wood grain, while leather seats require periodic cleaning and conditioning with specialized leather balm.
