Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A longcase clock, commonly known as a grandfather clock, is a tall, floor-standing timepiece driven by weights and controlled by a pendulum enclosed within its wooden case. First developed in the late seventeenth century, these clocks became central features of British horology throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

Traditional longcase clocks were built using solid hardwoods such as mahogany, oak, or walnut for the outer cabinet. Internal mechanisms were crafted from cast brass and steel, featuring engraved brass dials or painted iron faces with glass aperture doors.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints, original brass movement plates, weight-driven mechanisms, and hand-engraved dial details. Examining the wear around winding holes, the natural oxidation of the timber, and maker signatures on the dial helps verify authenticity.

A longcase clock serves as a strong architectural focal point when positioned in an entrance hall, formal dining space, or library. Pairing rich mahogany timber tones with neutral walls or contemporary artwork creates an engaging balance between historic interest and modern styling.

Keep the clock in a climate-controlled environment away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent timber shrinkage or finish degradation. The mechanical movement requires professional servicing and oiling every three to five years alongside routine winding.
