Large Original Midcentury Abstract Oil Painting by William Ernst Burwell, Frsa

1940 - 1960
Description

A stunning midcentury abstract oil on board by the listed artist William Ernst Burwell (1911-1974). Beatifully painted with heavily applied textures of predominantly greens and reds. It is in its original gallery frame of painted softwood. We have obtained several of the artists works from his studio. Painting is unsigned but we can gurantee its authenticity. Condition is very good, the original frame has bumped corners and some marks but is generally good.

The painter and stage designer William Ernst Burwell, FRSA was born in Kingston-upon-Hull, Yorkshire. He studied at Hull College of Art and Brighton School of Art and showed at the RA, NEAC and elsewhere in Britain and overseas. From 1940-1946 he served with the Essex Regiment and was subsequently employed at Pinewood Studios. The many film sets of the 50s, 60s and early 70s on which he worked included 'Oliver Twist' and the 'Black Narcissus'. His work is in the permanent collection of the Imperial War Museum. 'Bunny' Burwell was a founder member of The Colne Group and also a member of The Free Painters Group. He lived at Turk's Head Court, Eton.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Mid-century abstract oil paintings are defined by their departure from realistic representation, focusing instead on colour fields, geometric structures, textured impasto, and expressive line work created primarily between the 1940s and 1970s.

Artists during this period typically applied heavy oil-based pigments to natural linen or cotton canvas stretched over timber frames, frequently finishing the works with thin wooden strip frames or float frames.

Authentic period canvases often show natural age-related characteristics on the reverse, such as darkening of the unprimed linen, historical gallery or artist labels, period stretcher keys, and subtle craquelure in heavily painted areas.

A large abstract piece works well as a focal point mounted above low-profile furniture, such as a teak sideboard, or displayed against neutral walls where its dominant colour palette can be picked up in soft furnishings.

Keep the artwork away from direct sunlight, radiators, and high humidity. Clean the surface gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush to remove dust, avoiding liquid cleaners or abrasive cloths.
