Puckerings has dated this piece to the 1800s.

The lid opens to reveal a leather writing surface with gold embossing with a matching leather within the lid. There is a tray section at the back for a (short) dip pen and / or other bits and pieces; each side is a brass topped glass inkwell, one for red ink, the other for black.

The leather writing surface lifts to reveal a storage compartment underneath for storage of letters or stationery. Unusually in this box there is a secret drawer, something one would only expect to see in larger later writing slopes, so a real pleasure to find in this box. The Mahogany panel a the back lifts and can be removed to reveal the single secret drawer filling the area under the tray above.

There is a brass pin which holds the drawer in place and can be removed once the lid is opened, then allowing access to the drawer which is lined in a red velvet.
Complete with working key and a good glossy patina, it remains in excellent condition. Measures 10 1/2" x 8 1/2" x 4" tall.
