A late eighteenth century coloured etching depicting a view of Temple Bar in the City of London as seen through the main arch towards Butcher Row 1797.
Engraved by the print maker John Roffe (1769-1850) after a work by the painter and draughtsman William Capon (1757-1827).
The Temple Bar is the only surviving gateway to the old City of London, and stood for over two hundred years at the junction where the Strand meets Fleet Street.
It was at the heart of the legal district of London, being close to the Temple Church and was the principal ceremonial entrance to the City from the City of Westminster.
It has now been rebuilt at Paternoster Square as part of a redevelopment immediately north of St Paul's Cathedral.
