Description

A Lowestoft porcelain cylindrical polychrome tankard circa 1775. The body is decorated with a large urn and sprigs of flowers. There is a scrolling gilded edged boarder to the top. The handle is of typical Lowestoft shape and decorated.

The tankard was from the James Comyn's collect. James was one of the most avid Suffolk based collectors of Lowestoft porcelain. We had sold several pieces to James prior to his death. His collection had a full Doll House tea service which was his pride and joy.

The piece is in good condition. There is some internal blemishing to the under glaze porcelain and kiln smuts to the top of the handle. Both very common in Lowestoft porcelain.

Lowestoft porcelain was manufactured in Suffolk, England, between 1757 and 1802, using a soft-paste porcelain body containing bone ash. The production focused primarily on utilitarian domestic wares decorated with underglaze blue or overglaze polychrome enamels.

Artisans crafted these pieces using soft-paste porcelain bodies fired at lower temperatures than hard-paste ceramics. Hand-painted designs were applied using metallic oxide enamels before undergoing a secondary firing in a muffle kiln to set the decoration.

Authenticity is assessed through light translucency, body weight, glaze characteristics, and wear on the unglazed foot rim. Genuine soft-paste pieces typically display a warm, creamy tone when backlit and may show subtle glaze pooling or minor manufacturing flaws.
