Description

To the Victorians snakes were a potent symbol which represented the opposing forces of good and evil, fertility and rebirth, poison and medicine. When Albert gave Victoria a gem-studded snake engagement ring in 1837 serpent motifs became even more popular as a symbol of commitment, wisdom and everlasting love.

This rare 19th century solid silver photograph locket has a beautiful sinuous snake which wraps all the way around, keeping its tiny treasures safe inside. The piece has acquired a lovely silver patina which we have left intact; if you prefer a higher shine it could be polished up.

The locket is in excellent antique condition; it opens easily with a thumbnail and shuts securely with a click. Both the picture frame inserts are intact; we have left the cardboard and watered silk backings which came with the locket but these can easily be removed to insert your own photos or keepsakes.

Size: 5cm drop including the bail. The oval part of the locket measures approx 2.8 x 3.5cm.
