Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Dutch marquetry of the early 19th century is characterised by intricate floral, foliate, and scrollwork inlays covering large structural surfaces. Influenced by Neoclassical and Empire design traditions, these pieces feature dark timber bases, such as mahogany, decorated with contrasting wood veneers.

Craftsmen primarily used dense mahogany or walnut for the carcass, incorporating lighter fruitwoods, boxwood, and holly for the marquetry inlays. Secondary construction often utilised pine or oak for drawer linings, complemented by cast brass handles and original glass mirrors.

Authentic pieces feature thick hand-cut veneers, hand-dovetailed drawer joints, and natural irregular shrinking in the timber backing over time. Inspecting the underside and rear reveals hand-sawn timber marks rather than machine-cut precision.

Position the piece as an anchor in a master bedroom or spacious dressing room against neutral or muted walls to highlight the complex wood patterns. Pair it with simple contemporary lighting and minimalist accessories to maintain visual balance without overwhelming the space.

Keep the timber away from direct sunlight and fluctuating humidity levels to prevent veneer lifting or cracking. Clean surfaces gently with a soft microfiber cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish sparingly once or twice a year to preserve the lustre.
