Gents antique 9ct gold Mappin wrist watch, 1924.

The watch has a Swiss hand-winding movement which is working nicely. The movement is protected by an inner hinged cover which has a little scratching.

The watch measures 34mm diameter excluding the winding crown and the fixed wire lugs. The case is 9ct gold and there are hallmarks inside both of the hinged case backs for Edinburgh (import mark) 1924, together with the Mappin & Webb mark and also the importer’s mark for Arthur George Rendell.

In 1907, an act came into force which meant that all imported watches had to be assayed in a UK assay office and marked with British import hallmarks. For this, a sponsor's mark was required. In this particular case, Arthur Rendell was an employee, and probably in charge, of the department that handled imported watches at a company called Pringles, the UK's largest wholesalers of jewellery, silverware, clocks and watches, so it was deemed relevant to use his initials.

This particular watch would have passed through Pringles on its way to the Mappin showrooms.

The dial has light marking if you look very closely.

The signed dial has the red 12, a subsidiary seconds dial and an outer minute track. The minute hand is a period replacement but both hands are in the Breguet style. To initially set the time, pull the crown out to second position and turn it so that the hands move clockwise. There is a hairline between 3 and 4 but again, not overly noticeable to the naked eye.

A new leather strap has been fitted.

The watch comes in a new presentation box.
