Antique George III Flame Mahogany Secretaire Chest of 4 Drawers C1790 -1800

19th century
Description

Antique George III Mahogany Secretaire Chest of 4 Drawers

A truly remarkable Georgian Secretaire Chest of drawers.

We are delighted to bring to you one of the finest examples of a rare Georgian (circa 1790) 4 deep drawer flame grain Mahogany Secretaire chest of drawers. This elegant chest is in an outstanding original condition featuring its original beautiful original lightly faded colour and original French polished finish with idillic patina and charm.

This beautiful period piece is ideal for the person who needs a desk and storage space without wanting to see office related items.

From the top down, this chest features Ebony Inlays to the top with cross-banded edges and fiddle back Mahogany complete with cross-banded lipping's to the edge.

This stunning secretaire chest has a moulded, beaded and flame grain & book-matched large secretaire drawer to the top which unlocks with the original Barrons Lock and its original warded key. The secretaire drawer opens smoothly and folds flat to reveal its beautifully fitted interior which has a baize covered writing surface (new), 6 wide flame grain Mahogany drawers with their original turned knobs and 7 large pigeon holes large enough to store paperwork, receipts and even small laptops.

The Secretaire drawer stands over three descending deep drawers that have mahogany drawer fronts with cock-beaded edges (none missing), Oak linings and all drawers feature their original finely turned quality Mahogany knobs which are all matching original to the piece with no breaks.

The Drawers all have their original 'Barrons Patent' brass locks which all works on its singular original triple warded key. Robert Barron of London 1778-1792 was notable for his invention of the double acting tumbler lock which this chest incorporates.

The lock on this secretaire is second to none and features a slam lock, dead bolt and triple guarded warded lock which is un-pickable. The secretaire compartment lock also has a secret unlocking method which involves turning the key and waiting to hear a 'click' before turning the key the other way to unlock it, making the unknown user believe the key does not actually work.

Although the lock is working perfectly as intended, for user ease of use, we have reversibly disabled the slam lock catch because its quite the complex locking procedure and were worried the key would be accidentally locked inside. We can re-enable the slam lock upon request or we can include pictures and instructions on how to re enable it. We have a video on our instagram of this stunning lock in action with the case removed.

The chest stands on four turned Regency feet and has a reeded moulded edge above. The finely dovetailed solid Mahogany drawers are in almost perfect condition, smoothly operating with little to no drawer wear and are very clean inside. The Secretaire compartment latches effortlessly with its original side latches and stays which are made from solid brass and are of the highest quality.

We have lovingly restored this item by replacing the green baize, rebuilding the drawer runners so they operate perfectly, servicing the lock and reviving, cleaning & waxing all surfaces. The chest has had no expense spared in its restoration whilst maintaining its original patina and charm as you can tell from the finished result.

Please note; This item is in fantastic condition for its age as shown by the photographs below. Being an antique item of this age there are obviously marks, scratches and dents, however, we feel that these points are which adds to its charm and character to a piece.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
