Fine Aubusson Entre-fenetre, France, 19th Century, 2.88m X 1.05m

19th century
Description

Finely woven using wool, silk and metal thread, this is a superior Aubusson weaving from the second half of the 19th century. Entre-Fenetres were wall panels normally designed to hang between windows, often as part of a suite. This piece has an elegant design centred by a hanging flowering urn, framed by architectural forms. Note the beautiful cartouche at the bottom, probably designed to run underneath the window. Today, this piece would make a wonderful decorative hanging, ideal for a period setting. Recently cleaned and lined, it is in excellent condition.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An entre-fenetre tapestry is a narrow, vertical textile panel crafted in Aubusson, France, designed specifically to fill the wall space between two tall windows. Produced predominantly from the 17th through the 19th centuries, these pieces feature decorative floral, classical, or architectural ornament framed by detailed borders.

Aubusson tapestries are traditionally hand-woven on low-warp looms using wool and silk threads over a cotton or linen warp. The weavers utilise a slit-tapestry technique to achieve soft tonal transitions and defined outlines across intricate floral and scrollwork designs.

Authentic 19th-century pieces display hand-woven structural irregularities, subtle colour variations from historical natural dyes, and visible reverse-side thread hand-finishing. Look for period-specific motifs such as rocaille scrolls, suspended floral baskets, and acanthus leaf borders.

A tall vertical tapestry can be displayed in a narrow wall space, hallway, or staircase landing to draw the eye upward and add textual warmth. Mounting the panel with a continuous Velcro header ensures even weight distribution while preserving the structural integrity of the weave.

Preservation requires hanging tapestries away from direct sunlight, dampness, and strong heat sources to prevent fibre degradation and fading. Cleaning should consist of light surface vacuuming using a low-suction nozzle covered with a protective mesh screen.
