Aramis Antiques has dated this piece to the 1850s.
The box opens to an olive green hide writing slope with gilt tooling in the Greek key pattern. Under the slop are two compartments. The deeper one contains three secret drawers behind a panel, operated by a strung latch. At the top of the slope are small compartments for inkwells, stamps, pens and seals. The rosewood has a warm rich colour, and the overall condition is excellent for the age of the item. The brass work and leather are clean and undamaged. A very handsome example. Comes with key.
