Large 19th C. Turquoise colour Peking Glass Quan-Yin

This is a lovely moulded glass statue of the goddess Quan-Yin from the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) in the shade what present the colour

of Turquoise.

Glass was introduced to China by Christian missionaries in the 18th/19th century and the Chinese glassmakers were choosing the

colours which resembled precious /gemstones such as Amber - Turquoise - Jade etc.

The Quan-Yin is in perfect condition (no chips or scratches) and she stands about 27cm tall

Peking glass developed during the Qing dynasty in China, established in Imperial workshops during the late 17th century. Craftsmen adapted European glassmaking techniques to create opaque and translucent glass vessels and figures, often designed to emulate precious gemstone materials like jade and turquoise.

Peking glass was produced by adding metallic oxides, such as copper, to raw glass batches to achieve specific colourations like turquoise blue. Pieces were formed either by dipping layers of molten glass or casting, then hand-carved and hand-polished using lapidary wheel techniques similar to jade working.
