Very Rare Battle of Britain Period Raf Air Ministry Wall Clock by Stockall and Marples from 1940

1920 - 1940
Description

Very rare 14 inch RAF wall clock by Stockall and Marples from 1940

~~ Excellent original condition throughout ~~

This is a rare example of a mahogany cased RAF Air ministry 14 inch wall clock dated to 1940 made by the highly respected makers of Stockall and Marples.

This clock would have been in use during the Battle of Britain in 1940 and the case is fully marked with the date, air ministry insignia and makers name.

These heavy fusee movements by Stockall and Marples are slightly better made than the standard Elliott model, When compared side by side the gears are slightly wider and heavier, the plates slightly thicker and the movement is held together with brass screws on either side instead of the normal tapered pins.

The mahogany case has a wonderful rich colour and patina and the grain really does shine through and this is complemented by the polished brass bezel.

The dial is original but does not have the RAF insignia you normally see, it may have been removed at some point as the texture of the paint in this area is slightly shiney. One other possible explanation would be that this was a Sector clock and the dial has repainted many years ago, I have examined the dial very carefully and can find no traces of blue yellow or red paint which would indicate that this was a sector clock The only way to prove either way would be to find some record of the serial number in either MOD files or Stockall and Marples records.

A Battle of Britain Sector Clock By Stockall and Marples would be a rare discovery indeed.

The glass is original and is perfect with no chips or cracks.

The high quality solid brass 8 day movement is totally original and is marked with the airministry insignia and the date. It has just undergone a full overhaul, clean and service by Alan Willliams FBHI who is a Fellow of the British Horological Institute so is in tip top condition and should give trouble free service for many years to come.

It is keeping accurate time to within 1 minute a week, which I think you will agree is not bad for a 70 year old clock.

The clock comes with its original winding key, pendulum and bottom door key.

This is a must for any collector of high quality clocks and those who are looking for authentic World War II memorabilia, especially as this is the 70th anniversary of The Battle of Britain.

The clock movement comes with a full 12 month warranty.

If you would like further information or more detailed photographs please contact Andrew and Lynn Wilson of Fowey River Antiques, Cornwall on 01726 813155 daytime and evenings. Please be aware this clock is also available for sale in our shop and therefore may be withdrawn.
