French Panetiere or Bread Safe C.1770

18th century
Description

Beautiful late 18th.c. French panetiere or bread safe in fruitwood (probably cherry) c.1770. A superb example of the form, topped with large finials and with beautifully carved and shaped rails and well turned spindles to the front and sides. Carved love token heart and arrows detail at the centre of the top rail. With flowers and ears of corn to to the little lockable door which also retains the original oversized steel hinge, pierced escutcheon plate, lock and key. Shaped apron, continued on the sides, carved with a classical urn at the front and raised on scrolling feet. Slatted floor, original top and back panel (wall papered on the inside) The iron plates at the rear are a typical feature of the panetiere and allowed it to be secured high on a wall (away from pests and children) from where it could be brought to the table at mealtime. Very good condition with particularly good colour, cleaned and waxed in our workshops.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
