Description

Late C19th Italian bronze ‘Grand Tour’ souvenir reduction, after the antique , of “The Dying Gaul” .

Mounted on the original Rosso Levanto marble base with a moulded edge. Well cast detailed study of the iconic sculpture , depicting the wounded Gaul wearing his neck torc ,slumped upon his broken sword , shield and horn in defeat.

Naked apart from a modesty fig-leaf , the mortally wounded warrior is portrayed with his head bent downward , his belt and discarded martial equipment lie around him .

The Roman marble version of the Hellenistic original was re-discovered in the C17th whilst excavations were made for the “Villa Ludovisi “ in Rome , and later housed therein. Now exhibited in the Capitoline Museum, Rome .

Marble and bronze copies of this powerful sculpture can be found in many of the sculpture galleries of the great English countryhouse collections such as Syon Park , Rousham and Blenheim Palace , and the leading museums and private collections of the world .

Good original colour , patina and surface with only minor highlights and verdigris. Richly figured Italian burgundy-red marble detachable plinth base with no damage, repairs or breaks.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Grand Tour bronzes are 18th and 19th-century scale reductions of classical Greco-Roman statues, purchased by European travellers as educational souvenirs during continental tours across Italy.

These figures were cast in bronze using lost-wax or sand-casting techniques, finished with dark patination, and typically mounted onto polished marble or stone bases.

Authentic pieces generally display crisp casting detail, natural surface wear or oxidisation in handled areas, substantial weight, and hand-chased anatomical features.

A bronze classical figure acts as a focal point when placed on a minimalist bookshelf, an executive desk, or a dark wood mantelpiece alongside leather-bound books.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft, dry lint-free cloth or soft brush, avoiding chemical solvents, and apply microcrystalline wax annually to safeguard the patina.
