N Wilson Antiques Clocks has dated this piece to the Regency era.
This housing then has an ormolu mount of a harp to the right hand side as well as another depicting a putti with scrolling surrounds to the front. The base of the case is then rectangular with a shaped moulding around the base. This rectangular section then has a stunning ormolu mount depicting griffins and a head within a wreath to the front as well wreaths surrounded by scrollwork to the sides. The left of the case then has a superb bronze model of a putti cast in exceptional detail and appearing to lean against the case whilst playing a gilt flute. Then whole piece then sits on four thin, round feet.
The dial is then set out in black Arabic numerals and has an intricately patterned gilt surround which frames the dial perfectly. The dial is then finished by two unusually shaped and gilt hands.
The movement is then wound from the front and accessed from the back. It ticks away as it should and comes complete with its pendulum and winding key. It is a single fusee, silk suspension example of the upmost quality. The movement is then signed to the back by the maker “THOMAS HAWLEY STRAND NO 59”.
“Watchmaker to the King. Partnership of Thomas and John Hawley, a business operating at various addresses in London between 1760 and 1862. 1817 Directory gives Thomas Hawley at 75 Strand. 1826-27 Directories give Thos. Hawley & Co. at 75 Strand.”
