A French bistro mirror is a tall, slender wall or leaning mirror produced in France during the nineteenth century, originally created to maximize light and spatial perception in commercial cafes and residential spaces.

These mirrors were constructed using timber frames coated with gesso plaster, which was carved or moulded before being painted or gilded, combined with mercury or early silvered glass.

Authentic period pieces exhibit natural craquelure across the gesso finish, subtle oxidisation or foxing within the glass mirror plate, and hand-cut timber backing boards.

Position the mirror leaning against a narrow hallway wall, beside an entrance door, or situated between two windows to reflect natural sunlight and enlarge the surrounding space.
