Collinge Antiques has dated this piece to the 1890s.
Discovered on the Greek island of Milos in 1820 and put on display in the Louvre, the Venus quickly became perhaps the most famous icon of the Classical world with reproductions purchased as souvenirs of The Grand Tour gracing the homes and gardens of the wealthy. A superb example here with quality casting and a particularly good depth of patina to the face and torso. With a large signature inscription in the casting on the base 'R.on Sauvage' suggesting this may a copy of an original by the French sculptor Charles-Gabriel Sauvage (1741–1827). Excellent condition. Plinth sold separately.
Dimensions: Width 11", Height 38", Depth 8".
