Description

A fine Late 19th Century Antique English Victorian Copeland Pottery Dish / Charger, one of a pair presently available, decorated with a mountainous scene, and signed by William Yale of Stoke, Staffordshire, the reverse with painted title "Fairy Glen ~ Bettws-y-Coed { sic. } ~ N. Wales", No. 520 and with impressed COPELAND Maker's Mark. William { Billy } Yale was born in Newport, Shropshire in 1843, and was employed by Copeland from circa 1869 to 1883, where he was known for painting marine views and winter scenes. After leaving Copeland, he set up his own studio in Liverpool Road, Stoke-on-Trent, advertising himself as a Tile and Slab decorator. During this time, he began decorating sagger ware plaques bought in from other potteries which he then fired in a kiln attached to his premises.
