19thc Bristol Nailsea Victorian Glass Rolling Pin C1840

19th century
Description

An 19thC early Victorian clear, red and blue glass rolling pin c1840. This object was most likely made in the Bristol Nailsea glass factory, which closed in 1873. The rolling pin is hand blown with a hollow centre but is made of one integral piece of glass, comprised of the different colours, including the handles at each end. The even swirling effect was produced during the hand blowing. One handle is open ended (where the blowing pipe was) and the other handle bears a good pontil mark, where the glass was cut. There is an occasional crystalline effect in the hollow, said to be leftover from salt, which was typically stored there. The condition is exceptional, considering it’s age and that a rolling pin is essentially a utilitarian object.
