As part of our Japanese works of art collection we are delighted to offer this highly decorative Meiji period 1868-1912, cloisonne enamel Koro or incense burner, the large scale vessel rests upon three gilt bronze feet with gilt bronze rims to the lid and opening, the lid resting within the unusually shaped concave opening, the finely enameled marbled ground is exquisitely decorated to the entire circumference with silver and gilt wired butterflies amidst native flora including chrysanthemums and peonies, the lid surmounted with a silver & gilt decorated Namikawa style finial, the interior of the Koro being heavily counter enameled, although unsigned we can confidently attribute this work to similar works by the well known Meiji period enamelist Honda Yosaburo , an absolutely delightful piece of cloisonne enamel from the golden age of the Meiji period circa 1900-1910.
