Antique Four Glass Single Fusee Brass Library Clock John Massey 89 Strand London

19th century
Description

Antique Four Glass Single Fusee Brass Library Clock John Massey 89 STRAND London.

This lovely antique library clock ha a brass case with a shaped top adorned with a round finial. The body of the case then has four brass columns to the edges as well as bevelled glass panels to the front, back, and sides. The base is then shaped like the top and is finished by four turned brass feet. The glass panels in the sides do seem to be ever so slightly short although this is hard to notice.

The dial is then silvered and set out in black Roman numerals with a thin ring to the outside marking the minutes. The dial is then signed by the maker “John Massey 89 STRAND London”. The dial is then finished by two shaped, blued steel hands.

The movement is then a single fusee example of the upmost quality and is ticking away as it should. It comes complete with its regulating pendulum as well as its winding key. The movement simply looks wonderful in this clock being that it can be fully viewed.

It is listed for collection in person due to its delicate nature although delivery can be arranged if needed!

It measures approximately:

- 13.5” / 34cm Tall.

- 7.75” / 19.5cm Wide.

- 6.5” / 16.5cm Deep.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A four-glass library clock is a table or mantel timepiece originating in the 19th century, featuring a rectangular brass frame fitted with glass panels on four sides to display the internal movement.

These clocks are typically constructed with brass cases, bevelled glass panels, steel movement components, and engraved brass or silvered brass dials.

An authentic single fusee mechanism includes a conical pulley connected to the mainspring barrel via a chain or gut line, designed to maintain constant force as the spring unwinds.

Position the clock on a timber mantelpiece, executive desk, or dark wood sideboard to provide a focal point alongside contemporary books and minimalist decorative objects.

Dust the exterior regularly with a dry, soft microfibre cloth and clean glass panels using a lint-free cloth lightly dampened with glass cleaner, avoiding contact with lacquered metal surfaces.
