Antique Rosewood Intricatly Inlaid Mantel Clock by Arnold & Lewis Manchester

19th century
Description

Antique Rosewood Intricatly Inlaid Mantel Clock By Arnold & Lewis Manchester Paris.

This lovely French mantel clock has a shaped rosewood case with a lovely shape and fantastic colour. The front of the case is then intricately inlaid with bovine and fruit woods in fantastic detail. The inlay features a wonderful array of thing to include cherubs, vines, books and a globe to give the piece a nice “library” type design. The sides of the case then have lovely fretwork panels. Finally the base is stepped out and finished with four round feet.

The dial is then silvered with a wonderful engine turned centre. The chapter ring is then silvered and set out in black Roman numerals with a thin ring to the outside marking the minutes. The centre of the dial is then signed “ARNOLD & LEWIS MANCHESTER” as well as “Made in Paris”. The dial is then finished by two lovely shaped hands and a bevelled glass set into a brass bezel.

The movement is then wound from the front and accessed from the back. It is ticking away and chiming as it should and comes complete with its pendulum and winding key. It strikes both the number of hours on the hour as well as once on the half past via a gong.

It measures approximately:

- 13.75” / 35cm Tall.

- 9.75” / 25cm Wide.

- 6.25” / 16cm Deep.

Mantel clocks became popular household status symbols in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, designed to sit prominently above a fireplace. Late Victorian models frequently featured ornate Neoclassical marquetry inlays rendered in fine hardwoods such as rosewood, often pairing English timber cases with precise French movements.

These timepieces were typically constructed using a solid timber frame layered with rich rosewood or mahogany veneers. Decorative elements relied on intricate marquetry composed of boxwood, satinwood, or bone, complemented by brass bezels, silvered brass dials, and steel hand fittings.

Authentic period examples display hand-cut wood marquetry rather than modern printed imagery, along with natural age patina on the timber and dial. They often bear retailer signatures on the dial alongside stamped French mechanical movement serial numbers visible on the back plate.

Place the clock as a focal point on a fireplace mantelpiece, sideboard, or bookshelf to add architectural character. Contrast its detailed woodwork against neutral walls and balance it with minimalist modern ceramics or framed botanical prints.

Keep the clock away from direct sunlight, radiators, and high humidity to prevent wood warping or veneer lifting. Dust gently with a dry microfibre cloth, avoid harsh chemical polishes, and have the mechanical movement serviced by a professional horologist every few years.
