Large Antique Double Fusee Bracket Mantel Clock with Rare Pinwheel Escapement by John Grant London

18th century
Description

Large Antique Double Fusee Bracket Mantel Clock With Rare Pinwheel Escapement.

This large antique double fusee mantel clock has a mahogany case with a lovely shaped top. The body of the case is then square with the front corners inlet and nice brass added to the inlet edges. The front of the case is then inlaid with brass below the dial. The base of the case then has a moulding to the front and side edges. Finally there is four small, round wooden feet to the bottom.

The dial is then enamel and set out in black Roman numerals with a thin ring of dashes to the outside marking the minutes. Every five minutes is then marked in black Arabic numerals. The centre of the dial is then marked by the maker “JOHN GRANT LONDON”. The dial is then finished by two lovely shaped hands as well as a domed glass set into the brass bezel.

The movement is then wound from the front and accessed from the back. It comes complete with its regulating pendulum and winding key and ticks away as it should. The clock also chimes the number of hours each hour via a bell. The movement is then a double fusee example of the upmost quality with exquisite engraving. The escapement of the movement is then extremely rare being that it is a “pinwheel” escapement which is very hard to come by!

The clock case, dial, and movement has been fully restored!

‘Watchmakers and Clockmakers of the World’ by Brian Loomes lists two John Grant’s working in Fleet Street the second entry being the maker of this beautiful clock from 1817 to 1867 and born in 1796, son of the first John Grant also a clockmaker working in Fleet Street from 1781-1817. Interestingly the book ‘ The Georgian Bracket Clock’ by R.Barder shows an example of a satinwood cased bracket clock, there is also another example of one of his bracket clocks on page.187.

Listed for collection in person although a courier can be arranged so please contact if you require delivery.

It measures approximately:

- 20.25” / 51.5cm Tall.

- 12.5” / 32cm Wide.
