Antique English Table Vesta - Go-to Bed - Victorian C.1860

Description

A highly decorative table vesta, almost resembling a Victorian bird cage or a Gazebo. The small non-safety matches would have been stored inside and lit on the strike underneath.

At night, one of the lit matches would be placed in the receptacle on top of the lid producing enough light to get one up the stairs where a chamberstick could then be lit, hence "Go-To-Bed".

Dating to around 1860, Victorian in era, it remains in excellent condition having been professionally re-polished to gleam. The base diameter measures 2 1/8" and the box stands 2 1/2" tall.
