English Fusee Library Clock By Brockbanks & Atkins, London. Numbered 12306. Circa 1835.
Status:This item has been sold Sold by:M. C. Taylor
A typically good quality, English mantel or table clock by these well-respected makers.
The eight day duration, single chain fusee movement with Anchor Recoil escapement, pendulum locking bracket and upper, micrometer regulation to the pendulum.
Behind a 3 1/4'' wide x 4 1/2'' high, engraved and silvered dial with wax-filled floral scroll engraving around the minute track and Roman hour numerals. The lower having a blanked area bearing the maker''s name ''Brockbanks & Atkins, London'' in script and also the number ''12306''. The blued steel hands being tapered to a point and the hour hand having a Fleur-de-Lys. The dial is framed with a silvered sight moulding fitted to the glazed front door.
The ''4-glass'' mahogany case has a carved caddy top with a flat top and moulding around its base. The trunk of the case has a full-height locking front door that is bevel glazed and flanked by canted and reeded corners with lamb''s-ear terminations. The sides being plain and having recta...ngular apertures that are also bevel glazed. The rear locking door is also glazed and the base of the case has a frieze over a carved, convex quadrant moulding and a plain plinth upon four low block feet.
The partnership between these eminent makers was from C.1815 until 1840. Their business address was at 6, Cowper''s Court, Cornhill, London. This fine clock would have been produced towards the end of the partnership.
The movement is relatively clean and in good working order, however, it has not been attended to by us. The dial is good but would really benefit from re-silvering and lacquering. The case is good for its age but both lock keys are missing.
The price is for the clock in its present and working condition. Any work required by the purchaser can be discussed upon enquiry.
