15ct Gold Victorian Etruscan Revival Torpedo Earrings

19th century
Description

These 15-carat Victorian torpedo earrings are the most fantastic rich colour, instantly identifiable as high-carat gold.

Around 1880 many gold treasures dating back to the ancient Etruscan era (700-300 BC) were being discovered in Italian tombs, leading to the emergence of the Etruscan Revival as Victorian jewellers in England sought to recreate the style. Craftsmen employed considerable skill to make finely detailed pieces using multiple gold working techniques and typically employing high-carat gold and semi-precious stones.

Fifteen-carat gold pieces are not overly common (in the UK only really used between 1854 and 1932) and as this fineness was generally used in high quality pieces, it is attractive to collectors.

Condition: Overall these earrings are in very good antique condition, with a few very minor dints normal for their age; one earring also has a tiny tear and dent just at the right edge of the decoration (see video and very magnified photo). When worn in the ears it's very hard to see they're not perfect unless you're looking for it very closely.

Size: The torpedoes measure 3.4 x 0.9cm, the total drop is 4.8cm.

Weight: 3.3g.

Please note antique boxes pictured are not included, your item will come in a new box.
