Superb 16th century Corpus Christi figure, carved from Lime or Lindenwood, still retaining much of the original polychrome and gilding, and with all four limbs, unlike many similar carvings of the era. This Christ figure is quite large, standing 37cm high, with an arm span of 36cm, and is elegantly carved with well defined musculature and sinews really evoking the struggle of what the body is going through.He is depicted wearing his crown of thorns, his perizoma knotted over his hip, and his head turned to the right in an expression of stoic serenity. Stylistically the carving is very close to the Italian style, but this figure more than likely originated in Southern Germany.The hands and feet bear the crucifixion nails through them, and there are still traces of red pigment representing the flowing blood - similarly there is the wound to Christ''s side, pierced by the spear of Longinus, also showing the traces of blood.Understandably there are surface losses and ...
