Exceptional Enormous Antique English Coromandel Jewelry Box C.1850

19th century
Sold by Puckerings
Description

An outstanding example made from exquisite and exotic Coromandel wood with it's sophisticated grain and colouring. Made even better being brass bound with the corners brass inlaid on the interior edges.

I was informed it came from French aristocracy although it is an English box and dates to the mid-nineteenth century. It was certainly top of the drawer in it's day with it's top-notch construction, grand scale and weighing a tonne! The brass inlaid initials to the top E P would have been expensive to execute and clearly another sign of the box's fine quality.

The lid opens and locks into place, this is released by squeezing the right-hand hinge at the back which allows the lid to then be closed again .. the interior of the lid has a fitted mirror.

This upper section has a deep compartment at the back which would accommodate bottles and a tray for jewellery, all having been professionally re-finished in a hand-marbled paper.

The front of the box has drop-front and reveals two drawers, each is released by pushing one of the two button's beneath the mirror, the top one being leather lined and the one beneath being lined in a purple velvet with fitted ring compartment running the entire width.

Once the front is down, the quality again becomes evident with the smartest of locks by Bramah (working key) has been engraved by the retailer: " C.F. Hancock Son & Co., Jewellers & Silversmiths, To The Queen & The Prince & Princess of Wales, 38 & 39 Bruton St., Bond St., London" it couldn't have come from a smarter Mayfair address!

Quite wonderful, in excellent condition, measuring 14 1/2" x 10 1/2" x 9" tall.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
