Antique English silver pocket watch, Pennington, Hyde.

The watch has an English stem-winding movement, probably by one of the Coventry makers. It is signed with the name of the original retailer, Philip Pennington, Clarendon Place, Hyde. The movement is protected by an inner hinged cover.

The watch measures 55mm diameter excluding the winding stem and the loop. The case is silver with rose gold embellishments and there are hallmarks inside both of the case backs for Chester 1906, with a maker’s mark for the Coventry case maker Samuel Yeomans.

The front and sides of the case are in good condition. The hinged case back has a few “dings”.

The watch glass is in lovely condition.

The dial is also signed with the retailer’s name. The dial is in lovely condition, and it has its original pin-set rose gold hands.

Originally the watch was a centre seconds chronograph which was operated by way of a sliding button to the side of the case. However, there was a design fault in that when the chronograph feature was stopped, the whole movement stopped. Consequently, if the button was accidentally switched to the ‘off’ position when it was in the pocket, the whole watch stopped. Many of these watches were later adapted so that the chronograph button was fixed in place so that the watch was purely a pocket watch, with the chronograph hand running constantly.

The watch comes in a new presentation box.
