Welsh Comb-back Chair

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: Havard and Havard

A beautiful comb-back chair from Cardiganshire. The chair originated, according to family members, from the Lampeter area.

Unusually, both the seat and arms are made of oak, the arms clearly made from the same naturally curving branch. The cresting rail is made from a close grained wood, probably sycamore or a fruitwood, and the remaining sticks, legs and stretchers are of ash.

There is an element of historic woodworm but none that compromises the chair. There are no repairs or replacements and the surface is crusty in parts, polished in those areas subjected to use and natural wear. There is a thick dark varnish over a chocolate brown paint and this in turn over a blue/green paint which is visible on areas of the seat.

It`s a wonderfully honest and handsome example.
