Description

A late Victorian treen stationery box dating to c1880. It is likely made of a light shaded wood such as birch or maple as it was intended to be worked with a pointed instrument to produce the overall pattern of smooth thistles and thistle leaves against a penwork background, which is densely pricked and coloured darker. The decoration appears on the sloping front, side and raised back. The sloping front opens to reveal some shelving for paper, envelopes and the like. The frame is reeded for additional interest. It is quite a humble piece, probably Scottish due to the thistle theme but also makes a pretty and cheerful desk accessory.
