Antique Pair of Chinese Gold Thread on Silk Embroidered Panels

1900 - 1920
Description

A spectacular pair of antique Chinese embroidered pale blue silk panels, dating to approximately c1900-1930. The panels have been reframed by a previous owner in red lacquer frames with a black mount. The dynamic scene embroidered on each panel depicts, in the central field, a mythical bird, mythical dog of fo and mythical scaly dragon like creature, above a bed of flowers and a dense base of chevron gold thread stitching which, I think, represents the earth. As well as the abundant use of gold thread, highlights are picked out in navy, green, red and black threads. The central field is surrounded by a bands of earthly symbols and a further band of geometric pattern. The panels were intended as a pair as the three main creatures are apposite, in that they face left or right towards each other in each panel. The condition is excellent, though pleasingly there are some variations in the shades of the pale blue silk background.

There are reflections in the photography due to the glazing and lighting. They do look superb with the glinting gold and pale blue, very decorative and interesting.
