A remarkable and interesting Art Deco era desktop inkwell made of solid brass encasing a green onyx pen stand c1930. The inkwell contains its original fitting ink glass. It is almost certainly French made as the mark DEPOSE is stamped underneath with another, possibly foundry, mark. The shape of the inkwell is reminiscent of the prow of a sailing vessel or a wishbone - when viewed from the pointed end, it really does look like the prow of a boat! At the wider end, the sturdy brass frame encases a slab of green onyx, the stone of restfulness and purity (apparently!). The brass frame either side is dipped, for holding pens. The inkwell is raised on the brass plinth with a triangular shape, and lifting lid. This is truly a hefty piece - it weighs just under 800gr - it has a strong, masculine design typical of some Art Deco themes. I imagine it might have been intended for a smart yacht, or a least a smart yacht owner, and started life sailing around the Med!! Very nice indeed. Excellent condition.
