Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Mantle lustres are decorative glass vessels, often designed to hold candles or act as vases, surrounded by suspended cut glass or crystal prisms. They gained immense popularity during the 19th century, particularly in Victorian homes, where they were displayed in pairs on fireplace mantels to reflect candlelight and add visual symmetry to a room.

Victorian glass lustres were typically crafted using cased or flashed glass, combining opaque white glass with vibrant colours such as emerald green, ruby red, or turquoise. Techniques included hand-painted enamel decoration, gilding, cut-to-clear patterns, and hanging lead crystal prisms suspended from wire hooks.

Authentic 19th-century examples display evidence of handcrafting, such as pontil marks on the base, slight variations between paired items, and hand-applied gilding or enamel paint. Original crystal prisms often show minor wear, micro-chipping near the wire holes, and high lead content that creates distinct light refraction.

A pair of glass lustres can be styled symmetrically on a fireplace mantelpiece, sideboard, or console table to create visual balance. Grouping them alongside understated contemporary objects or neutral backdrops highlights their elaborate ornamentation and colourful glasswork.

Clean glass bodies gently using a soft, lint-free cloth lightly dampened with warm water and mild detergent, taking care to avoid rubbing gilded or enamelled surfaces. Remove the crystal prisms separately to clean them individually, ensuring wire connectors are not bent or strained.
