This is a charming Staffordshire pottery creamer jug depicting a happy smiling cow and her milkmaid. The milk is poured in through the maids hat and then (tastefully) out of the cows mouth - it really does evokes the rustic rural spirit of its time. The cow has such a fantastic face, certainly one of the best looking I''ve ever seen!
The colours of both cow and maid are bright and vibrant, and the scene is set on a little patch of grass with curling leaves.
On the underside is a very old label, and also an hand written / incised number which was a security reference number from its previous owner (rather than a makers mark).
The jug comes in a good ''used'' condition, with wear consistent with its age - over 150 years of being loved! As you will see from the photographs, there are a few slight paint losses, a firing mark on the inside of the maids hat ( not visible on the outside ), and a slight chip inside of the cows mouth.
