This is a lovely quality heavy pestle and mortar which would have been used by an apothecary or chemist to grind ingredients in the preparation of pills and ointments.
The pestle has decoration and cross hatching along its length and the letter ''S'' engraved to one end. On the base of the mortar are the engraved initials HBS, which are repeated again in a circle,
The mortar stands 9cm high and 8cm across, and the pestle measures 17cm in length and 3cm wide at the base end, both parts weighing 1.4kg together. It is in a good condition.
Please have a look at the photos and get in touch if I can answer any questions.
