Honore Pons Ebonised and Ormolu Mantel Clock

19th century
Description

A fine quality French ebonised and ormolu mounted mantel clock by Pons.. A front glazed door with a visible brass pendulum. Gilt bronze case mounts and surmounted by a cherub/putti and bird. A gilt cast dial with individual enamel numeral cartouches and blued steel hands. An 8-day duration mechanism striking the 1/2 hours and hours on a bell by Pons. A higher quality mechanism with thick plates and pendulum transportation lock. Circa 1850.

Honoré Pons is listed in Baillie and Tardys books and is credited as reviving the clockmaking industry in Saint-Nicolas-d'Aliermont near Dieppe. He was sent there in 1806 by the Minister of the Interior and built up clockmaking there until his death in 1857. This movement has the mark of "gold medal 1827" on the front plate.
