The Birmingham Guild - Art Deco Fireside Companion Set of a Child & Lamb Circa 1930.

Description

This 1930's fireside companion set is a truly striking object, depicting a seated child holding a lamb with pure Art Deco design and lines.

The set was made by the celebrated 'Birmingham Guild', a venerated group of craftsmen who were established in 1890 as 'The Birmingham Guild of Handicraft' by Arthur Stansfield Dixon, a friend and contemporary of William Morris. Their motto of 'by hammer and hand' saw them create many notable metal works, and this fire set is no exception.

Standing an impressive 57cm high, 23cm wide and 11cm deep, it is cast in iron and has a bronzed, gilt coloured finish, and bears the Birmingham Guild stamp to the rear. The set is an art piece in its own right as well as having a household purpose.

The back of the set has three hooks holding a brush, poker and tongs - the brush bristles are worn, but the implements are part of the matching set and could always be replaced with modern versions if desired.

The companion set comes in a good 'used' condition with the surface marks of nearly a hundred years of being well loved, servicing a fireside! It is a great looking statement piece and despite a few surface scuffs it retains great colour and patina, and would look fantastic in any home.
