This lovely fellow is a pressed flint glass Owl tobacco jar, attributed to Matthew Turnbull of the Cornhill Glassworks in Sunderland.
The jar''s design received its registration on the 19th October 1888 and has the number 111661 stamped into the base by the feet, and on the inside of the lid at the top of the head.
The owl stands 17cm high, and 9 cm across the chest, 8.5cm across the base.
Overall he is in good condition with some light surface wear commensurate with the age of the jar, the glass remaining crisp and bright, reflecting the light through the feather pattern beautifully.
Inside the jar, there is a small chip to the rim (not visible from the outside) and a few small nibbles to the rim where the jar has been opened and closed over the years. As mentioned, these are not visible when the jar is together, and does not detract from the look of the piece.
