Yew Windsor Armchair Stamped Gabbitass Circa 1840

19th century
Description

Superb all yew-wood low back windsor armchair with elm seat stamped on side of seat E (lizabeth) GABBITASS, WORKSOP (fl1839-44). Has lovely pierced splats, curved arms supported by well turned uprights and raised in finely turned legs united with a shaped crinoline stretcher. Unusually even the back legs are yew. All in superb un-touched original condition with just a crack to the base of the left hand arm upright. Wonderful honey colour with magnificent waxed patina. See 'The English Regional Chair' by Cotton plate NE231 for an almost identical chair.

Size; 36" high, 22" wide, 19" deep. 18" seat height.
