Antique English Figural Desk Sander - Poodle - Signed Atkin Brothers

Description

Most unusual to have one of these pounce pots in the form of a handsome poodle and unusual to have it hallmarked by the silversmith. The underside is where the mark can be found for the famous Atkin Brothers.

Made from silver plate, silver over a base metal, the casting has been beautifully executed to show off the curly Poodle coat.

Before the invention of blotting paper the ink was sprinkled from containers resembling pepper pots, to hasten it's drying. This powder is prepared from single substances such as finely ground salt, fine sand, or powdered soft minerals such as talc or soapstone.

The head of the Poodle unscrews to fill the sander with the pounce substance.

A wonderful Victorian desk accessory, perfect for your desk-top or dog collection. Excellent condition, wear commensurate with age, measuring 3 1/4" tall.
