A George III Satinwood And Marquetry Tea Table

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: Cave Decorative Arts

A fine George III period satinwood and marquetry semi-elliptical tea table, the top inlaid with neo-classical decoration including bell-flower and anthemion designs radiating from a fan motif, with tulipwood crossbanding, opening to reveal a circular top inlaid in a similar fashion to the top, the frieze with a single drawer decorated with trailing flowers, the square tapering legs headed by an inlaid patera and a delicate string of bell-flower, resting on raised block feet.

There is a marked similarity between the neo-classical decoration on this fine tea table and a group of satinwood inlaid furniture thought to have been commissioned by Alexander Monro for Auchinbowie, Scotland. A Pembroke table with related ornament is attributed to the Marlborough cabinet-maker, Henry Hill (d.1778). (see Lucy Wood, Catalogue of Commodes, London, 1994, p.67, fig.47).
